Better Than Chocolate by J. Lynn RowanIn that act of full disclosure I have known the author since we went to college together many ages ago We have drifted apart but do that random social media/touchstone thing where you are not involved in that daily life, but don’t lose contact. The kind of friendship that comes without birthday cards but if you needed a kidney I’ll see if I am a match. That being said this is the first time that I have ever read anything that she has written and I am more than pleased. She artfully manages to take the standard idea of romantic comedy and weave in a story that makes the reader want to keep reading. The characters are dynamic and fresh and are done in such a way as to make them utterly relatable to anyone you may know. She manages to blend unfamiliar backdrops with a solid story that keeps both the reader grounded and yet looking to the horizon, and turning the pages. Overall a great read, perfect for a plate of chocolate chip cookies and a cup of tea…or if you are less inclined to bake a nice glass of wine and a Snickers bar. I would highly recommend this book and personally can’t wait to see what she writes for us next.

Better Than Chocolate Sweet Somethings Book 1 eBook J Lynn Rowan Reviews
This is a standalone read with a HEA for all concerned. I am going to try to review the book and not my personal feelings. There are three best friends, two females and one male. Early on two of the trio hook up and become a couple. Now, they have split, she is engaged to someone else and the boyfriend is assumed to have his heart broken. the spare female is more upset over the breakup than either of the breakees. It was sort of weird that she was about to have a stroke over their breaking up when the two of them seem fine with it and constantly try to tell her they are fine. She is just sure they are not.
then she finds out a secret that he has been carrying around for the past 9 years and she feels responsible. OK, that is as far as the story needs to go. Now, just personal opinion. I got real sick of the heroine trying to make this breakup more than it was. Then she finds out the reason and she turns on him and takes all the responsibility for it when she didn't even know the reason to begin with. I thought she was a little over the top in the way she responded. I really got to where I didn't like her and wished he would wash his hands of her as a friend or anything else. For a woman her age she sure acted like a teen in high school.
The story could have been so much better if she had responded differently. A HEA for everyone except maybe the best man. But still it would have been better if it had gone in a different way. It was an ok read but since I didn't like this character it is hard for me to get excited about recommending it to anyone else. However, the things that bothered me may not bother anyone else. So, maybe you should give it a try and see what you think.
I was not paid for this review. I am not an author nor do I know one. I am not kin to this writer. I am a reader and this is my opinion, nothing more, nothing less. 6/25/17
J.L. Rowan has a great love of the English language as she uses interesting words rarely used today. The story line was clean and flowed smoothly without dragging on being over descriptive, yet colorful. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting a little escapism and quick relaxing read.
I liked that there was no explicit sex, but the romance scenes were done very tastefully. What I didn't like was that the author didn't do her homework. All you have to do is ask a question online, and you can find out that there is no need for a passport to go from Savannah (or Atlanta!), Georgia to either Puerto Rico or the US Virgin Islands. I also wasn't thrilled with the fact that both hero and heroine are so easily led by others. She literally can't say no and lays right down to make herself a rug for literally EVERYONE , and he's such a wuss that he proposes to another woman because "everyone expected it". Hate to say it, but these two deserve each other. I rarely dislike a book, and I don't hate this, but it was a real disappointment.
If you are looking for a delightful romantic story about best friends, an unexpected wedding, and a subtle attempt at matchmaking set on the tropical Caribbean islands of Puerto Rico and St Croix, then look no further, Better Than Chocolate is the book for you!
What could be better than chocolate? Hmmm ... that thought alone caught my attention when I read the description to this sassy tale. Author J. Lynn Rowan weaves a fun romantic story that follows the crazy journey that Carmella Sannarelli embarks on when best friend Sadie Miller informs her that she will be her Maid-of-Honor in the Caribbean island of St. Croix. But there is just one little thing ... Sadie used to be engaged to fellow best friend Ryan Wutkowski, that is until they suddenly break up and she takes off to the Caribbean where she meets wealthy Nelson Mattingly in flight, and a week later she is engaged to be married in three weeks! Phew ... did ya get that? Well, when Sadie tells Carmella about her plans, Carmella is astonished that her two best friends have broken up without telling her, plus the shock of the upcoming nuptials completely throws her for a loop. And if you think that is crazy, it's just the beginning ... Carmella and Ryan are unexpected seat mates on a flight to San Juan, where she has a two day layover and he is attending a conference. They catch up with each other ... it's just like old times ... but the mystery of the breakup still has Carmella confused. Things get even crazier when Carmella arrives in St. Croix and Sadie is up to her old matchmaking tricks when she introduces Carmella to Nelson's brother and best man Joshua, but Sadie's subtle matchmaking antics gets turned up a notch when Ryan suddenly arrives in St. Croix and joins in the wedding festivities. Hmm ... could an unexpected chance at finding one's true love really be better than chocolate?!
Better Than Chocolate is a thoroughly entertaining romantic tale that will keep the reader in stitches. Told in the first person narrative by sassy Carmella Sannarelli, the reader is transported along for the ride as Carmella embarks on a crazy journey of personal discovery, and an unexpected chance at finding true love.
This is a fast paced and fun novella that has engaging characters, humorous interactions and witty dialogue, flashbacks to the three best friends' relationship, and a sweet romance. The author provides the reader with a rich description of the tropical Caribbean island settings of San Juan and St. Croix, it makes you long for a little tropical adventure of your own. I really enjoyed following Carmella's journey, how the mystery behind Sadie and Ryan's breakup unfolds, and the swoon worthy sweet blossoming of a new romance that is so unexpected but oh so right, and maybe even better than chocolate (gasp)!
Better Than Chocolate is an enjoyable and lighthearted romance story that will leave a smile on your face.
Disclaimer I received a copy of the book from the author / publisher in exchange for my honest review.
