Seven gentle tales of the paranormal with O'Henry-like sensibility, charm and humor
Set in a small Pennsylvania mountain village, where strange and wondrous things happen, Seven from Haven are quirky, fantastical Twilight Zone-like short stories which prove what they say about this town “Haven takes care of its own.”
"The stories are magical. Grotta teases us with very precise detail and almost journalistic scene setting, then when we're not quite looking carries us gently into a world of soft boundaries, unexplained visitations, and of deep, deep hope and simple courage. These stories speak from and directly to the heart.” - David Zarko

Seven from Haven eBook Daniel Grotta Reviews
A lovely collection of seven stories set in the semi-fictitious Pennsylvania village of Haven in the Pocono Mountains, this is a wonderfully satisfying read. I spread it out over a couple of weeks, reading one story before bedtime every other night. The stories are magical. Grotta teases us with very precise detail and almost journalistic scene setting, then when we're not quite looking carries us gently into a world of soft boundaries, unexplained visitations, and of deep, deep hope and simple courage. These stories speak from and directly to the heart.
Seven from Haven by Daniel Grotta is a Pixel Hall Press publication. This book is a collection of seven ghost stories centered around the town of Haven. This book was originally released in October of 2012.
This is a great book to pull out for Halloween. Of all the paranormal offerings this time of year, I love ghost stories the best. I tire easily of the slashers and we are saturated with vampires, zombies, and werewolves. These a good old fashioned ghost stories. Some are on the sweeter side, others are more gruesome, some are just ironic. There are few real spine tingles in this group of stories.
Haven is close to the Poconos and is evidently a pretty tight knit area, as Haven looks after it's own.
If you are in the mood for a ghost story, any time of the year, I highly recommend this collection. Overall this is an A.
People who know say that Haven takes care of its own. And in "Seven From Haven" we learn in seven short stories how the community of Haven helps its residents and anyone else who may wander in.
This is not a book version of SyFy channel's "Haven," although both are centered around a community named Haven. This book is actually seven short stories written by Daniel Grotta, who wrote a biography of J.R.R. Tolkien, "Architect of Middle Earth."
"Seven From Haven" is a kinder, gentler version of some spooky tales that would be perfect for reading at an all-ages Halloween gathering. There are no grisly descriptions of beheadings or blood-washed scenes of zombies feeding on humans. Instead it's more like The Twilight Zone -- stories that made goose bumps crawl up your arms or made you think twice about strange things that happen.
These are stories with a heart. We can feel the grief of the man whose father dies unexpectedly, we can suppress our laughter at stupid crooks with their hapless hostage, and we can feel the wonder of a new father who assists at the delivery of his baby.
In most of the stories, the reader might guess what's going to happen, but it doesn't dampen the satisfaction of a good ending.
This is a very well written collection that is really easy to get into. Grotta has such a straightforward yet approachable writing style that draws you in while keeping you on your toes. He paints some brilliant pictures and tells some amazing tales while providing his readers with a few laughs. Each story is told as a separate entity, yet they all blend together into a unique collection. This short trip into the paranormal definitely packs a punch.
You get to know the characters of these various stories quite well considering the short length of each story. Grotta only provides you with the details necessary for their role while focusing on the story in question as a whole.
This novel is definitely perfect for Halloween, especially for those who enjoy the holiday without the scariness. Grotta has created the perfect balance between spooky and funny.
Please note that I received this novel free of charge from the author in exchange for an honest review.
Those of you addicted to adrenaline and sex mixed with the paranormal might want to skip this book. True, it has tales of mindless grief, a gruesome motorcycle accident, a man pressed into bloody, desperate emergency surgery, senseless violence and echoes of the Holocaust, but these things are mostly transformed into wisdom. If the writers of Murder, She Wrote did a paranormal series, it would resemble this charming book about a rural hamlet in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania.
We meet, in seven longish short stories, unexplained phenomena such as people from a bygone era coming out to help a man in grief and a woman in labor, a man who "died of empathy" whose unexpected legacy lives on, roads and car troubles that will not let guilty criminals get away, and a cemetery that thanks people for being a good neighbor.
You know that feeling you get after watching "It's A Wonderful Life"? When I finished reading this I had to wipe a tear away, and sighed, "That was wonderful." If you prefer your ghosts as friendly, protective spirits, this book is for you. The Village of Haven does, indeed, look after its own.
Haven, PA "is a village that takes care of its own." This is made very clear when reading the seven short stories in Seven From Haven by Daniel Grotta. In each story the attention to detail and solid prose draws the reader in. There is a perfect blend of the paranormal and reality. The stories vary in subject content. What if you could meet the person you might have become if you had made different choices? An old cemetery is about to be demolished and there are no funds to save it-or are there? A physician appears to help with an emergency C-section. Why doesn't anyone know who she is? The author is a powerful storyteller. He has created a memorable collection that is well worth reading.
I received this book free of charge and I give this review of my own free will.
